10 Most Disappointing Villains From Recent Horror Movies

7. The Murderous Mascots - Five Nights At Freddy's

Tense, terrifying, atmospheric, and sweaty-palm-inducing are just some of the words to describe the thoughts and feelings when playing the first two Five Nights at Freddy's games by Scott Cawthon from 2014. Disappointing, frustrating, plodding, and sleep-inducing are just some of the words to describe the thoughts and feelings when watching the first two Five Nights at Freddy's films from 2023 and 2025.

The games' immersive survival horror premise is dreadfully diluted in the first instalment. Instead of focusing our heightened anxieties around the animatronic antagonists - Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, etc. - the film favours exploring the laborious backstory surrounding security guard Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson). Instead of mainly hearing Freddy et al. moving around sinisterly in the pizzeria shadows, then jump-scaring you out of your seat, we see cuddly-looking mascots plodding about and building a bloody fort!

Thankfully, the overall horror is wound up come the second film, especially the Marionette possessions of Lisa (Mckenna Grace) and Mike's sister Abby (Piper Rubio). And it does elicit an oddly juxtaposed cheer when Mike is sat at the computer desk figuring out how to disable the escaped Toy animatronics, whilst covering his face with a Freddy Fazbear mask to stop himself from being killed by the monstrously mangled Prototypes.

Unfortunately, these are the only horrifying highlights across both films. Far too much time is spent on the human melodrama and beyond the chilling confines of the pizzerias. Therefore, we'll forego our cheque for $120 and be on our way, because these shifts simply weren't scary enough.
