10 Wild Horror Movie Weapons That Made You Squirm
4. A Mallet - Midsommar
Much like Get Out earlier in the list, Midsommar is a film that largely plays on an audience's mind psychologically more so than with physical, gory violence, but it is certainly not without it. In fact, it makes those visceral moments stand out even more.
For the most part, Midsommar's setting is the quiet and peaceful Scandinavian countryside, which of course plays host to events that couldn't be further from matching its serenity. It's a beautifully demonic juxtaposition that only adds to the tension and the disbelief.
There aren't many weapons to be seen, until a particular ritual takes place whereby the elders of the community are invited to jump off a cliff. It is a traditional honour to die in this way, but the cliff just wasn't high enough, and the jumper needed a little assistance in dying once he hit the ground.
Clearly, this was something that the cult had dealt with before, because, with as little fuss as possible, a member walked over to the half-dead elder, giant mallet in hand, and finished the job with a swift and brutal shot to the head. Ari Aster did not shy away from showing the entire, horrifying spectacle, which really drove home for the first time the truly bizarre and dangerous nature of Dani's (Florence Pugh) situation.
