15 Seemingly Terrible Horror Castings That Totally Paid Off

2. Immaculate - Sydney Sweeney

Few expected anything much from Immaculate, and one of the main causes of concern was the casting of Sydney Sweeney in the lead role.

Casting Sweeney as an understated nun seemed totally bizarre. First up, she's one of the biggest sex symbols in the world right now, so her playing a nun inevitably caused a few raised eyebrows and secondly, she's associated with louder, crazier performances, mainly thanks to some of her explosive freakouts as Cassie in HBO's Euphoria. It seemed like a doomed performance... until we saw it.

Like many other conventionally attractive stars over the years, Sweeney has had to fight to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor and Immaculate reaffirmed her sometimes underrated acting chops. As Sister Cecilia, Sweeney subtly conveys her emotions in the quieter moments but swings for the fences when the script requires, delivering some of the craziest acting work of her career. Most notably, her acting during the movie's ending is gloriously unhinged.

And therefore, if there's one thing we can take away from Immaculate, it is this: don't underestimate Sydney Sweeney. Even if she came up through Euphoria, an uneven and frequently-problematic series, that certainly shouldn't be held against her for she really is a bloody good actor.

And speaking of Euphoria...
