2. Randy Meeks - Scream 2

And now we have perhaps the single most shocking and upsetting death in the entire franchise - the sudden demise of everyone's favourite wise-cracking film nerd, Randy Meeks, in Scream 2.

Sidney and co. desperately try to track down Ghostface at Windsor College once the killer makes a taunting phone call, and as Randy angrily barks back, he's suddenly pulled into Joel's (Duane Martin) nearby news van by Ghostface. A scuffle ensues, but Randy is swiftly overpowered and repeatedly stabbed until dead. 

It's bad enough that a fan favourite character was taken out so brutally, but that it happened in broad daylight on a college campus, mere feet away from unsuspecting passers-by, no less, makes it all the more unnerving.

Though fans remain firmly divided on whether Randy should've stuck around a little longer, his death was at least bluntly effective in reminding the audience that anyone, no matter how well-liked, can die at any time.
