17. Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon

Some 20 years after it came out, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon remains a fondly remembered cult classic; an absurdly entertaining horror mockumentary that's both a genuinely tantalising slasher flick and a glorious love letter to the genre.

Given that the film ended with masked murderer Leslie (Nathan Baesel) coming back from the dead, many fans hoped that a sequel would materialise eventually. However, despite its cult fandom, Behind the Mask wasn't much of a commercial hit, and though writer David J. Stieve did soon start spit-balling sequel ideas, by 2017 director Scott Glosserman stated that their idea for a sequel had become dated due to changes in the horror genre over the years.

Glosserman didn't seem particularly enthusiastic about reworking that script to be more current, and so many gave up hope of Behind the Mask II ever coming to fruition. But in April, it was announced that Glosserman and Stieve would indeed be re-teaming for Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon, alongside original stars Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, and Robert Englund.

The team also opened a Kickstarter page to supplement the film's budget, while promising fans that it will be made regardless of how well the crowdfunding aspect goes.

Fingers crossed that they can deliver a sequel worthy of the original while also acknowledging how the genre has changed over the last two decades.
