20 Horror Movies That Fall Apart In The Final Act

19. Watcher

For its first two-thirds, Chloe Okuno's debut feature Watcher is awesome. Telling the story of Julia (Maika Monroe), an American living in Bucharest, who becomes convinced that Daniel (Burn Gorman), a creepy neighbour, is a serial killer, this takes admittedly familiar material and turns it into something special with the aid of nail-biting direction and another cracking performance from Monroe, who continues to prove herself as one of our greatest modern scream queens.

Much of this echoes Alfred Hitchcock in the best kind of way, but alas, Watcher can't quite sustain itself all the way to the end.

After toying with the audience's expectations throughout, Watcher goes down the most generic route. It eventually turns out that, yes, Daniel is indeed a serial killer who, of course, goes after Julia in the form of a bog-standard climax that's so much less interesting than all of the excellent material earlier in the film. In this particular case, it would've been better to try and do something different, for this really was the most predictable of final acts.
