20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises
18. Scream 8
Now, there's no mistaking the commercial success of Scream 7, which recently crossed the $200 million mark worldwide and became the highest-grossing entry in the iconic slasher franchise.
But creatively? Even accepting its messy development following the firing of Melissa Barrera and subsequent departure of Jenna Ortega, Scream 7 made a powerful argument that Scream is basically running out of creative juice.
Considering we've had three new Scream movies over the last four years, though, that stagnation shouldn't be terribly surprising.
However, Scream 8 was swiftly confirmed following the seventh film's success despite series-worst reviews, and while it was easy to be immediately pessimistic about another sequel being rushed into production, it does have some intriguing personnel attached.
Scream 8 won't be penned by any of the three writers involved with the previous trilogy - James Vanderbilt, Guy Busick, and Kevin Williamson - but instead will be written by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman.
The sisters are best known as the showrunners of Rian Johnson's brilliant crime comedy series Poker Face, which is more than enough reason to have faith in their ability to weave a compelling murder-mystery within the Scream franchise.
Above all else, Scream is in dire need of some fresh blood to bring a unique perspective and avoid things getting ever more stale. Here's hoping they can pull it off.
