20 "WTF Did I Just Watch" Horror Sequels
20. Terrifier 2
The first Terrifier had little success, but Terrifier 2, on the other hand? That one absolutely blew up, becoming one of the most talked-about horror films of the decade thus far.
A lot of this is thanks to just how dementedly 'WTF' the whole enterprise is, which serves as a reminder that sometimes, to stand out in such a crowded genre, you really have to go for it. Firstly, franchise creator Damian Leone ups the surrealism by deploying an endless stream of unhinged imagery and ultimately concluding with main heroine Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera) battling Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) with a magical sword.
Secondly, of course, there's the gore. Terrifier 2 doesn't just push the envelope, it throws the envelope in the shredder and sets the shredder on fire. This movie's ridiculously gruesome death scenes will have even the hardest horror fans feeling queasy, and there's a particular scene in a bedroom that's nigh-on unwatchable.
There are many flaws with Terrifier 2, and it is frequently distasteful, but it's difficult not to admire it at least to some degree. By going so freaking hard in every sense, Damian Leone made this sequel one of the unlikeliest horror hits in recent memory, and Art the Clown is now seared into the cultural zeitgeist forevermore.
