10 Albums That Were Supposed To Be Great (But Fell Apart)
5. Revival - Eminem
As the 2010's started to turn a corner, rap audiences roared when it was announced that Eminem was coming out with a new album. With the release of the worthy sequel to the Marshall Mathers LP in 2013 and one of the greatest freestyles in recent memory, there was this feeling in the air that Slim Shady might be able to come through with something unprecedented. Just the album title of Revival seemed like watching rap's phoenix rise from the ashes...that's not we got though, was it?
Across the 77 minutes of Revival, this is one of the most milquetoast versions of Eminem we had gotten since his slip-ups back in the days of Encore. Though Em had been up to a higher standard after the Recovery period, that is all but thrown out the window when you start to hear him team up with meaningless pop crossovers like Pink and X Ambassadors.
While there is some pieces of brilliance in the last track Arose, that's not enough to save the album from the amount of dad puns on display. Combined with the fact that he calls out trap music for being inauthentic, this just comes off as a disgruntled dad staying too long at a party and rattling off about "kids these days." Trap might not be the most experimental genre of rap music, and yet it's still a lot better than what we got on here.
