10 Almost Perfect Folk Rock Albums With One Bad Song
8. Kurt Vile: Wakin On A Pretty Daze (2013)
Kurt Vile has been responsible for bringing folk rock back into the mainstream. During the 2010s he released a string of records that blended indie, psychedelic rock and folk, into a hazy, blissful ambience - perfectly suited for an aimless Sunday stroll.
The Philadelphia native, spent the 2000s producing lo fi recordings with Adam Granduciel. Together they formed the War On Drugs, before Vile split in 2008. The two remained amicable, and although you can hear similarities in their music - notably their tendency to sing like Bob Dylan - their sounds became distinct.
The War On Drug's early records were far more energised than the stuff Vile was putting out. Whereas Vile's Wakin On A Pretty Daze, feels like the War On Drugs fed through a slow motion filter. But it's pleasing, for the most part. The title track sets the mood and then the rest of the record slowly carries you along for the laidback ride.
As with his follow up record, B'lieve I'm Goin Down (2015), however, the constant dragging pace does become somewhat monotonous at times. It all becomes too much, with the aptly titled, Too Hard. A song with lyrics so oppressively pessimistic that it's recommended you don't listen to this number if you've had a particularly taxing day at work.
