10 Amazing Follow Ups To Classic Albums
4. Black Holes and Revelations - Muse
At the turn of the century, no other band seemed to have as much of a mixed reception than Muse. Even though Origin of Symmetry managed to strike a nerve with most rock fans, there were still plenty of hangers on willing to draw the lines between these space rock prodigies and Radiohead. After pretty much silencing that crowd after the release of Absolution, Matt Bellamy decided to go even bigger for Black Holes and Revelations.
Whereas the former album felt like listening to the sounds of the oncoming apocalypse, this record might as be what happens when we decide to venture beyond just Earth, with an entire tapestry of different sounds feeling like they're coming from the deepest depths of space. Along with the futuristic cuts like Map of the Problematique and Invincible, Muse also manage to show their sensitive side as well on the track Starlight, a proto space rock ballad that sounds like what Queen would have done if they listened to a lot of King Crimson.
As if to hammer the point home too, the closing track Knights of Cydonia is enough to save the entire album, taking the entire space concept and bringing a cowboy theme into the picture. Absolution may have set the table for Muse becoming the greatest in the world, but Black Holes is what happens when you let them do whatever they want afterwards.
