10 Amazing Rock Albums That You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
2. Sgt. Peppers - The Beatles
If you're looking for the pinnacle of the drug era of rock and roll, the mid '60s is always a pretty safe bet. Though the excessive lifestyle of rock and roll has gone through different incarnations throughout the years, it's easy to pinpoint the Summer of Love as the moment where everyone was starting to tune in and drop out from most of their suburban lives. Every era needs a soundtrack though, and the Beatles used acid as their muse on Sgt. Peppers.
This wasn't the first time that the Fabs had tried LSD though, with Rubber Soul and Revolver being the result of them being influenced by their chemical intake. This is the first time where that behavior started to have an effect on the music though, with most of the songs sounding like they're coming from another plane of existence half the time like John Lennon's Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds or the middle half of Mr. Kite.
It even started to have a drastic effect on the sessions as well, with John Lennon famously taking acid by accident when working in the studio and going on a strange trip after going up to the roof while trying to get some fresh air. In the midst of the sessions though, we got an album that captured a moment in time that very few artists have managed to do. You can blame it on the drugs if you want to, but you don't make a record like this unless you have some real songwriting chops behind you.
