10 Amazing Rock Songs Written For Movies

3. Purple Rain - Prince

When it comes to the greatest musicians of all time, no one has covered the entire spectrum of music quite like Prince. Just a casual look through the Purple One's discography will show him taking on everything from rock to pop to jazz to funk and every other genre in between. However, when Prince's aura finally became big enough for the cinema, it was time to move on from the dirty rock clubs into the arena.

Composing all of the soundtrack with his band the Revolution, Prince had something special in mind for the closer. When first coming up with the structure for Purple Rain, the goal was to write a song that would fit in comfortably with the singer-songwriters of the world like Bob Seger. Then again, Prince was never one for subtlety, as he takes this simple ballad and puts it into the stratosphere from the moment it begins.

While everything starts off calm enough, the vocals on this song almost seem like their coming from the great beyond, right before the lead guitar cuts through the mix. Running at a colossal 8 minutes, this song truly feels like the victory lap for Prince after making some of the most refreshing, futuristic, and fun pop music ever to come out of the '80s. It's classic, but y'all already knew that, didn't you?
