10 Amazing Songs That Will Make You Love Britpop
7. She Bangs the Drums - The Stone Roses
Whenever you hear Britpop being described today, it all felt like the next big wave of rock and roll. At a time when you had things like pop punk going on in the States, here were people who were speaking to the British youth in a way that was a lot more direct that what you got with the grunge wave. The name of the genre is Britpop though, and The Stone Roses reminded us that it's still pop music at the end of the day.
While John Squire brought a bit of a rock edge to every single Roses tune, you can't find a hook better than She Bangs the Drums, with Mani getting things started with an amazing bass line before the rest of the song hits you. Outside of the rock sounds of the guitar, there are also some dance textures woven into the mix, with the entire track sounding like it's floating on air from the minute that it starts.
Given that the song is about the protagonist spiraling through another day and being smitten by a girl who plays the drums though, this is the perfect choice, with the rest of the track making you feel like you're about to reach nirvana just by playing music together. Though Britpop had yet to invade the culture when this album hit, this song could be considered ground zero for the rest of the movement coming in the next few years.
