10 Amazing Songs That Will Make You Love Britpop
5. Parklife - Blur
After the grunge movement made us all depressed and lonely, we really needed something like Britpop to cheer us all up again. The past few years had all been about acts like Alice in Chains talking about how depressed they were, and it was time for some of that positive energy to be brought back into the fold again. And Blur definitely managed to sprinkle some sunshine into their music, only with a cynical twist to some of their lyrics.
When you listen to something like Parklife next to the rest of Britpop's classic albums, there's a lot more darkness on there than you realize. On almost every song, Damon Albarn is talking about people who are slowly losing touch with reality, and the title track is the most logical conclusion, especially when you have the jaded voice of Phil Daniels narrating the verses, criticizing some of the more obnoxious parts of everyday life for the well off side of Britain.
Once Damon eventually shows up, the entire chorus almost feels a little bit sarcastic. Now that you've seen what the average joe has to deal with every single day, talking about everyone walking hand in hand through their parklife practically feels like it's forcing a smile and telling you that everything is okay. Since this was supposed to be a love letter to classic British pop music though, we do need an homage to the Kinks in there to show us what's really going on on the ground.
