10 Amazing Songs That Will Make You Love Britpop
3. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
From the minute that most Britpop songs come on the radio, you can immediately tell the time and place that it came from. That's not necessarily a bad thing either, considering most of the bands of the time captured the feeling of living in the '90s so well. And while it took the Verve a long time to join the ranks of classic Britpop, Bittersweet Symphony feels like the one song of the genre that could stand on its own away from the genre label.
Flipping a sample from a classical reworking of a Rolling Stones song, Richard Ashcroft really captured what it meant to be on the ground floor of Britain on this song and seeing the miserable side of life. For all of the optimism that was coming from the rest of the bands in the genre, Ashcroft is oddly blunt this time around, equating life to doing nothing but making ends meet and earning just enough money to get by.
And while there's definitely a bit of '90s irony behind this song, there was a lot of genuine beauty in here as well, being among Noel Gallagher's favorite songs when it was first released. Every band may have wanted to right an anthem during this time, but Bittersweet Symphony has seemed to go all the way back around to be considered sophisticated art in the world of British music. That symphony might not go down the smoothest all the time, but it's one that we always have to play whenever we get up in the morning.
