It's not uncommon for extremely popular music to be relatively uninteresting. That doesn't mean that it's bad, necessarily it just appeals to a very wide demographic, and so takes less risks when it comes to alienating potential listeners. Nor is that to say that interesting music can't be popular these things are, after all, generalities.
With that said, sometimes the music industry experiences a different phenomenon. Sometimes popular music isn't safe OR interesting, it's just...terrible. You know what I mean. Everybody has that one song that they can't understand why it sold so well or why it was played so much on the radio. When you stop and think about it, it's not even that uncommon of an experience.
