10 Bands Destroyed By Just One Album
2. Pinkerton - Weezer
Out of all the albums that are qualified as career killers, Pinkerton probably is the one that deserves the least amount of scorn. After Weezer had come off a major success with their colorful debut album, songwriter Rivers Cuomo was completely disillusioned with the rock star lifestyle and in need of a break.
Rather than continue with his initial conceptual idea for the follow-up, Cuomo poured all his emotions into his lyrics, which seemed to be too much for many people to handle. Almost immediately, the entire Weezer fanbase seemed to ridicule this album for its shoddy production and its off-putting lyric sheet, even earning the band a spot of the Worst Records of the Year list by Rolling Stone.
A funny thing happened over time though. With many fans revisiting Pinkerton, it has become one of the group's most highly-acclaimed albums for its raw honesty and blemished sound. That wasn't enough to save the band though. After completing the tour for the album, the band went on hiatus and didn't come back to the spotlight for nearly half a decade. Cuomo has even gone on to say that he considers the record an incoherent mistake. Though he's entitled to his opinion, the very thing that killed this band has held up as one of their most exquisite displays of artistry.
