For me, Chain Reaction is the quintessential Diana Ross track. The second release from the otherwise poorly received Gibb produced, Eaten Alive, lead to the album selling 3 million copies worldwide. For some bizarre reason, Chain Reaction only scraped in at #95 on the Billboard Chart. Fortunately, Brits and Aussies seemed to have a better ear for the quality of the track with Chain Reaction becoming an immediate hit and topping the respective countries' charts. The track almost serves as a celebration of the singer's career. Chain Reaction boasts a similar joyful, carefree sound to some her Supremes hits, whilst also maintaining a modern eighties sounding style thanks to the Gibbs' slick production and ear for a good dance track. Diana's vocals soar and pack an emotional edge into the simple, punchy lyrics like "I'm on a journey for the inspiration, to anywhere and there ain't no salvation. I need you to get me nearer to you so you can set me free" Like the most part of Diana's career, Chain Reaction is great fun and asserts that the singer, after all, still reigns supreme.
