10 Best Follow Up Albums In Hard Rock

3. Dirt - Alice In Chains

While all of the grunge bands coming from Seattle had a mix of alternative rock in their sound, Alice in Chains had a different kind of groove going for them. Their sound did have a much more organic feel to it like their peers, but the sound had a greater weight to it that made it accessible to both metalheads and rock fans.

The band's debut Facelift made a great first impression with their signature use of heavy riffs and immaculate vocal harmonies from Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley. Once they hit Dirt though, the ominous nature of their debut got much darker than anyone had thought. If Facelift was the sound of you walking into the underworld, this was the sound of what happens once you reach the bowels of Hell. So that means this album is super heavy right? Hell yeah...to a point.

While each track has a signature creepy riff to it, there are also moments of melancholy coming from the vocal harmonies, which make these tracks both disturbed and gorgeous all at the same time. This record would end up being the group's pinnacle after Layne Staley succumbed to addiction, but all the pain they were feeling made for some of the greatest hard rock the 90's would ever create.
