10 Best Guitarists You've Never Heard Of

2. Guthrie Govan

Guthrie Govan is more guitar than man these days. The impossibly talented musician is revered by guitarists across the land but, like everyone on this list, he has not enjoyed the attention his playing deserves. Govan has been around for a long time as a player. His discography stretches back to the early 2000s when he spent a brief time as the guitarist of Asia. Most of Govan's fame amongst guitarists has come in the past few years as his instructional and play through videos hit YouTube and the wider world could see just how good he is. Being one of the few masters of the instrument out in the world today he can play any style of music he wants to, often without thinking about it and sometimes within the same song. There are tales out there that when he was a contributing writer for Guitar Techniques magazine he used to transcribe other musician's work on the train, without a guitar and only a handful of listens. Govan is one of the rare guitarists in the world who receives praise from the best players out there. Both Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani idolise Govan's style and his ability to play, at one point even committing their names to his MySpace with quotes about his playing, which is something rarely done by the greats in the genre. Currently he spends his time more as an instructor rather than as a performer, but he does tour and play live with his bands The Aristocrats and Erotic Cakes.
