9. 'Tupelo'- From The Firstborn Is Dead

Only the second single that the Bad Seeds ever released, Tupelo is a song that already shows their ability to move past the anarchic rock of the Birthday Party to something far more sinister. Tupelo, Missisippi is the birthplace of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Legend has it that he was born in the middle of a massive thunderstorm - an idea Cave, Mick Harvey and Barry Adamson used to create a song dripping with blues myth and imagery as they combine biblical ideas and themes with a swampy bass line and Cave's guttural growl to amazing effect. The whole song threatens to go off the rails as it builds, but teetering without going completely anarchic whilst staying truly menacing with its simple dark grooves.
