7. Fake Happy - After Laughter (2017)

After Laughter was a bold record. With its new-wave sound and lack of distortion, it took many fans by surprise when it was released.

In contrast to Paramore's earlier material, the instrumental of 'Fake Happy' is dominated by a catchy bass lick and a keyboard melody which sounds like something straight out of the 1980s.

As strange as the overall sound is, however, ‘Fake Happy’ is an undeniably pretty track with a stunning level of production.

What’s more, such a sound acts as a huge contrast to the lyrical content. As the title of the song suggests, Williams delves into the synthetic façade of the modern world, and how many of us project a false happiness.

In this sense, ‘Fake Happy’ is the perfect distillation of Paramore’s fifth album. It sounds upbeat and polished, but lyrically it's incredibly melancholy.
