10 Biggest Album Flops In Rock History
10. Second Coming - The Stone Roses
The Stone Roses may very well be one of the most overlooked bands in alternative rock. With just one album, these lads from Manchester combined dance, pop, and classic rock sensibilities to build the foundation of what would become Britpop later down the line. Their debut was a shock to the system, but fans weren't as attentive when coming back for more.
In the case of the Stone Roses, it may have been a case where the debut was just so good that pretty much anything the band released afterwards was slated to fail. Though there wasn't a chance to rewrite songs like She Bangs the Drums or I Wanna Be Adored, they seemed to give it a fair shot on Second Coming, as some songs ended up taking on a bluesy feel. It may have been good for what it was, but it was much too little too late.
By the time the band actually got back together to make their next record, the Britpop movement was already in full swing, leaving potential fans to pounce on Blur and Oasis before returning to the Stone Roses. The Roses would implode soon afterward, bringing one of the most influential bands in all of England to a stand still.
There probably wasn't a good chance of them topping their debut, but the good times didn't deserve to go out with this big a whimper.
