10 Biggest Breakups In Rock And Roll History

4. Aerosmith

As the '70s started to get underway, Aerosmith were quickly gaining traction as the first authentically great rock and roll band. After the British Invasion hit the States in full swing, here was a band taking the sounds of the Stones and Zeppelin and mixing it with a healthy dose of American boogie. Just to feed into the cliche though, everything went wrong when someone spilled the milk.

Okay...so that's not necessarily true. For the back half of the '70s, a fracture was starting to emerge between Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, who were both fighting over having their girlfriends on tour. While the initial friction made for some great songs like on Sweet Emotion, things mounted on their tour for Draw the Line, where everyone got into a scuffle backstage. Amid the drugs and booze, Perry's wife Elyssa lost it and ended up throwing a carton of milk at bassist Tom Hamilton's wife.

Since this was the first time everything had gotten this bad, Perry went into the hallway with Tyler and proceeded to leave the band, taking his guitar with him. Even when the band decided to finish out the tour and album cycle with other guitarists like Jimmy Crespo, the tension just led to guitarist Brad Whitford leaving as well. Aerosmith might have some magic tunes, but if you take out a piece of the puzzle, it's not going to be the same again.
