9. Dream Theater "The Enemy Inside" - Dream Theater
Dream Theater has been releasing intelligent, highly-polished and magnificently performed metal since 1988. While some scoffers may deem metal to be too low-brow for their tastes, Dream Theater's musicianship is based on a high degree of technicality and musicianship. The group's origins date back to 1985 when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung attended the Berklee College of Music with original drummer Mike Portnoy. Dream Theater's albums often feature songs with mutiple movements and intelligent narratives. The album in question is the band's latest effort from the fall of 2013 and our selection is the lead single The Enemy Inside. The song is a thoughtful treatment on a difficult subject; mental illness and suicide; certainly not your standard 'party all night' fare that the genre is typically associated with.
