9. Kanye West: Yandhi
When your dealing with a figure like Kanye West your going to have to allow for a few eccentricities... By now, Kanye is regarded as one of the more controversial figures in hip hop. To his fans, he's nothing short of a musical messiah; a pioneer of creative innovation, with a vision too grand for those unworthy to grasp it. To his detractors, Kanye is a guy lost to self-grandeur, arrogance, and religious doctrine. The truth probably rests somewhere in between. Kanye is a guy with unique and unbridled talent, battling with the complexities of mental illness.
Whichever side of the fence you stand on, there's no denying this guy is wildly gifted. The excitement around, even his scrapped material, is testimony to his impact on modern culture. His follow up to Ye, originally entitled Yandhi, was marked by countless wild rumours an an excited buss. Studio sessions were said to be taking place both in Africa and the United States; and a string of highly regarded musicians were attached to the project. This all coincided with Kanye's renewed love of Jesus, affecting the process to no end. At one point he threaten not to rap on the record, deeming it the "the devil's music". He even asked his collaborators not to engage in pre-marital sex while working with him...
Kanye eventually re-envisioned the project within a religious context, and much of the music was folded into Jesus Is King (2019). Although several bootlegged copies of the original have appeared online, no official or fully finished version has been released.
