Released in 2001 as the second single from the band's fourth album Bleed American, The Middle was the band's breakthrough mainstream single. The song was written in a time of desperation for the band, after being dropped by Capitol Records owing to fairly low record sales. Rather than experiment with their music, the band attempted to write something simple, and ended up writing The Middle. Around the time of its release, the song's video gained a huge amount of airplay on MTV, likely due to the fact it featured a bunch of young adults in their underwear. And let's be honest... who didn't enjoy watching it?
