10 Greatest Emo Songs Ever Written

By Brian Wilson /

4. Brand New €“ Seventy Times 7

The opening lyrics to Brand New's Seventy Times 7 basically sum up what the emo movement of the early to mid 2000s was really all about to many people. €œBack in school they never taught us what we needed to know, like how to deal with despair or someone breaking your heart€. Released in 2001 on the band's debut album Your Favourite Weapon, the song's lyrics are incredibly intimate, depicting a painful betrayal by a close friend and the rage and hurt the singer is left feeling. Throughout the song the singer wishes death upon the friend in multiple violent ways, including €œI hope you choke and die€, €œsearch your cell for something with which to hang yourself€ and the particularly brutal €œhave another drink and drive yourself home, I hope there's ice on all the roads, and you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt and again when your head goes through the wind shield€. With lyrics that descriptive and a passionate, pained delivery that manages to be catchy at the same time, Seventy Times 7 really is one of the best emo tracks ever written.
