10 Greatest One Hit Wonders Of The 1980s

2. I Melt With You - Modern English

The image of the '80s as a whole is pretty much trademarked by John Hughes movies. As much as people might remember stuff like Cold War or political discourse, the most prevalent image of the neon-colored decade came from the amazing slices of life coming from movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club. So how the hell did we manage to let this one song from Valley Girl slip through our fingers this much?

Even though Modern English do seem to belong on the post punk side of the spectrum, I Melt With You is one of the most perfect pop songs ever constructed. Using only two chords throughout most of its runtime, you can feel the teen angst bursting through every single note, feeling like these guys will follow their lover to the end of the Earth.

It's almost strange considering how much of a hit this was, given that it was never high on the charts to begin with. Regardless of its appearance on the soundtrack to Valley Girl, this only barely scratched the charts, only to become a staple of '80s nights the world over in the coming decades. Then again, this is the kind of song who's power could have probably worked in any decade that would have it. After all, the future is open wide.
