10 Hardest Metal Songs To Play On Guitar

2. Holy Wars...The Punishment Due - Megadeth

Every so often, an artist will try to challenge themselves when writing a song. Whether it's going into new musical territory or an attempt to practice something that they don't quite have down yet, these kind of tunes end up being as beneficial to the musicians' style as it is for the listeners. If you're in Megadeth though, that might mean putting every single guitar skill you can think of into a single song.

Granted, most of this song would be astonishing with Dave Mustaine's performance alone, as he tears through epic solo runs, fast tremolo picked breakdowns, and breakneck tempos all while singing the tune. On the other hand, it gets even more difficult when you add Marty Friedman into the mix, who offers even more musical madness like the Spanish-influenced acoustic breakdown right before you get into the meat of the second act The Punishment Due.

Though the initial start of the Punishment is a lot more straight forward, it doesn't stay that way, with Marty weaving together a huge tapestry of notes almost like he's not even trying. However, that's thrown out the window when you realize that was the easy part, as the harmonics lead you into the most chaotic form of control in the entire Megadeth canon. Mustaine has definitely carved out a worthy legacy for himself, but his status as one of the most advanced guitarists in rock can be traced back to this one song alone.
