10 Incredible Bands Whose First Singles Blew Us Away

6. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax

Quite possibly the most controversial choice on this list, Frankie Goes To Hollywood€™s how-to guide to gay sex caused a massive stir when it was first released in the UK in 1983. With an ad campaign that featured the words €˜ALL THE NICE BOYS LOVE SEA MEN€™. The song intentionally baited scandal and controversy with certain broadcasters at the time, with Radio 1 presenter Mike Read refusing to play the record, resulting in its banning from BBC Radio. It most certainly blew people away due to its suggestive lyrics and because of the controversy that accompanied it, but eventually reached the very top of the UK singles chart for five weeks, eventually staying in the top 75 for a whole year afterwards. Since then it€™s been covered by some of the biggest bands in the world like U2 and Blondie and become one of the biggest songs the UK has every released. Even though Frankie Goes To Hollywood only released two full studio albums, their legacy can be felt in the popular music today, with many pop stars choosing to accompany their single releases with controversy to attract press. Without €˜Relax,€™ there would be no Lady Gaga, no €˜Blurred Lines€™ (We'll leave it up to you to decide whether that€™s a good thing or not) and no Rihanna. Choice Lyric: €œRelax, don€™t do it / when you want to go to it€
