10 Legendary Rock Bands That Made Metal Albums
5. I Disagree - Poppy
For the part few years, the concept of genres at all has become kind of a blur. If you have any doubt, just look at someone like Billie Eilish, who's last album has gone from the kind of dense production you'd find in a hip hop song to making a full on rock ballad on Everything I Wanted. That's just the subtle blending of genres, and Poppy was going for complete audio whiplash when making I Disagree.
If you were to look at Poppy's back catalog, there's no chance that you would have guessed that this was where she would end up, being more in the vein of traditional bubblegum pop songs in the That Poppy era of her work. On her EP Choke, things started to change, bringing in help from the production team behind Fever 333 and getting into screaming on her records a lot more. Once we eventually got a full project of what that sounded like, I Disagree is the same kind of genre clashing that made BabyMetal so interesting, being mellow and bubblegum at one moment and than snapping on a dime to almost nu metal territory on songs like Concrete.
This whole project isn't just about the shock factor though. Going through each song, Poppy clearly has a love for the art form and makes for something that's surprisingly disturbing in some places. Genre defining has become almost meaningless at this point, but it's not every day that you get an album where it sounds like you're listening to Madonna at one moment and Nine Inch Nails the next.
