10 Modern Classics By Old Bands
2. Spit Out The Bone - Metallica
Across their discography, you can't say that Metallica's creative ventures haven't been interesting. From the pure thrash of their 80's output to their hard rock triumphs in the 90's, the band was both praised and reviled in metal circles.
As the band entered the 2000's, the group nearly fell apart due to personal problems and put out St. Anger in 2003, which was an incredibly contentious experiment. The band regrouped themselves with Death Magnetic in 2008, but it was clear they were still finding their feet a bit. Though their next double record Hardwired...to Self Destruct felt a bit bloated as a whole, "Spit Out the Bone" is an entirely different story.
This song is Metallica at their most feral, ferocious, and...well, metallic. The double-bass rhythm and intense tempo is juxtaposed by some of the thrashiest riffs the band has crafted in ages. Throughout the song's 7-minutes, the track pummels with the same fire as anything off of Master of Puppets.
With "Spit Out the Bone," it was as if Metallica took every awesome sound from their 80's glory days and combined them all together for one of the greatest tracks they have ever released.
