10 Modern Rock Music Artists With A Throwback Sound
10. Bully
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Alicia Bognanno, Bully launched in 2013 and released their first album two years later.
What began as a three-piece band eventually just became Bognanno on her own when Bully's third album Sugaregg was released in 2020. Maybe the other members didn't like the title? Their loss, it's great.
Whether on her own or whilst playing with others, Bognanno is clearly paying homage to the angsty female rock singers of the 1990s with her intentionally melancholy musical output.
With a little bit of Courtney Love, Aimee Mann, and Alanis Morrissette in her voice, Bognanno channels the spirits of grunge and alternative past to bring the two genres up to speed with the modern world.
The production values are much higher than most 90s fare, but that's only because producers have had 30 years to figure out how to make songs sound like they're not underwater.
With a lot of charisma, strong songwriting chops, and a clear vision of what she wants her music to be, it's hardly surprising that Bognanno has survived for as long as she has despite the many shifts in her career.
