10 More Perfect Rock Albums Of The 80s With No Bad Songs

3. Appetite For Destruction - Guns N' Roses (1987)

Opening this album up with the aptly named, Welcome to the Jungle, gave an explosive indication as to what this band was all about. The shrill cries of Axl Rose served to call a challenge to the reigning kings of the Sunset Strip, Mötley Crüe.

The time of commercialised, spandex wearing hair metal was coming to an end. This album had a higher degree of musicianship than what was typical at the time. Slash and Izzy Stradlin's back and forth approach to layering their guitars, resulted in a rawer sound that elevated them above their contemporaries. With intricate melodies, that drew from a blues rock background, their sound seemed to harken back to the roots of heavy rock.

Although many of the lyrics revolved around over-indulgencing in sordid and rebellious behaviour, they felt far less contrived than Mötley Crüe's. This was the revival of hard rock, and although Guns' would be challenge by the gritty grunge movement some years later, their success and popularity can not be passed off as whimsical. This album is one of the finest submissions into the hard rock category.
