2. Others By No One

Another newcomer on this list, Ohio ensemble Others by No One haven’t put out a lot of music thus far. Nevertheless, everything they have unleashed has been awe-inspiringly inventive and intricate, cementing them as an astonishingly ambitious and talented – yet delightfully self-mocking – group.

2015 single Gravity of the Bulls established their knack for winding rhythmic patterns, guttural growls, soaring singing, twisted instrumentation, and lighthearted voiceovers. By taking the compositional complexities of Frank Zappa; the histrionic indulgences of Devin Townsend; and the devilishly precise transitions of Between the Buried and Me, the song is a superb introduction to their virtuosic wackiness.

That said, their 2017 debut LP, Book I: Dr. Breacher, blows it out of the water. Basically, it’s a three-track, thirty-six-minute conceptual odyssey centered around the titular mad scientist, and it ebbs and flows between jazzy serenity, orchestral flights of fancy, post-hardcore hecticness, and an array of other personalities with incredible confidence and ingenuity.

Throw in some wildly varied cover art (as well as 2018’s explosive Oni-Chan! single) and you have a gargantuanly creative collective.
