10 Most Insane Controversies In Rock And Roll Music

2. Riot in Montreal - Guns N Roses

Just before the grunge wave took over the rock scene, fans were in for the tour of a lifetime with Metallica and Guns N Roses. Getting the two biggest bands on one bill for a non stop musical extravaganza felt like it couldn't be true, with Metallica riding high off of Enter Sandman and Guns being set and loaded from the Use Your Illusion double record. In fact, it may have actually been too good to be true if you look at what happened in Montreal.

Though most of the tour had been plagued with cancellations because of Axl Rose's antics, things came to a head once they reached Canada, as everything literally went up in flames. During the song Fade to Black, Metallica's James Hetfield was badly burned in a pyrotechnic accident that forced them to cut their set off early so he could seek medical treatment. This should have been where Guns N Roses stepped up to save the day, but Axl wasn't looking to be outdone, cutting his own set short after only a handful of songs after complaining of voice and monitor problems.

Even for all of the technical glitches, none of the fans were putting up with being cheated out of their money, storming into the grandstands and tearing the place to shreds, after which riot police had to be called in to deal with the carnage that was left over. Through all the chaos, here's hoping that Axl learned a valuable lesson. You can have the crowd in the palm of your hand, but the crowd can also show you its dark side if you don't come correct.
