10 Perfect Grunge Rock Albums Of The 90s
3. Vs. - Pearl Jam
Yeah, remember that up and comer named Eddie Vedder from the last entry? Well, apparently that kid was going places, since the remaining members of Mother Love Bone went on to form the genesis of Pearl Jam and rule the early '90s with their debut record Ten. Once they tasted the stadium rock success though, it wasn't long before they managed to double down.
Across Vs., this feels like the much more organic sound of Pearl Jam compared to Ten, which seemed ready for stadiums before it even hit the big time. Using their second outing as an excuse to let out their aggressive side, some of the licks from Stone Gossard are the closest thing to punk they have ever gotten, especially when mixing it with genres like funk on songs like Blood and Leash.
That's not to say that this is the more anti-establishment album either. Off of the first album, the band had already found their strength in writing songs about other people, and the laid back songs on here like Daughter and Elderly Woman do a great job at showing the more vulnerable side of when you can't reach your dreams. Although the majority of the grunge crowd would talk about how tortured they were inside, Pearl Jam took that anger and channeled it in every direction imaginable on here.
