10 Perfect Rock Albums That Almost Destroyed Bands
10. Band on the Run - Paul McCartney and Wings
If you're playing next to one of the most famous musicians who ever lived, chances are you're going to build up some resentment sooner or later. No matter what kind of genre you find yourself in, there's that little bit of envy that what you do isn't being taken as seriously as the rest of the band. Still, the members of Wings probably couldn't have picked a worse time to jump off the ship.
Then again, no one really saw something like Band on the Run coming. Compared to what we were seeing out of John Lennon and George Harrison's solo careers, Paul McCartney had some work to do before winning over the critics, especially with over the top ballads like My Love in his arsenal now. Just when he decided to shake things up by recording in Nigeria, everyone in the band except for Linda McCartney and Denny Laine met Paul at the airport and said they were leaving the group.
What we have here is Wings relegated to just a three piece, with only Paul, Linda, and Denny playing on most of the tracks. If that wasn't bad enough, Paul also had to create a makeshift studio once they got to Nigeria so they could make music properly. Even with all of the hardships to make it happen, Band on the Run gave Macca something that his other records couldn't: respect from the critics.
