10 Phenomenal Bands Whose Very First Songs Blew Us Away

6. Oasis - Rock And Roll Star

From the album: Definitely Maybe (1994) "Rock and Roll Star" is the opening track from arguably Oasis' only truly great album and even Noel Gallagher has described the song as 'probably my best ever song'. Who are we to argue? Cocksure, egotistical, brash and loud, whatever your opinion on Oasis, it's hard to deny their world beating intentions were writ large over the song that ushered in a new era for British Rock music. Brit Pop ousted Grunge in the UK almost overnight and it's easy to imagine the band chasing Grunge's flannel-shirt wearing cry-baby's down an alleyway before viciously kicking their nicotine-stained teeth in; Oasis were British grit and determination personified and they were already Rock N' Roll stars. Scratch beneath the surface and what appears to be a straight-up, no thrills rock song, reveals a few subtleties amidst some of Noel's finest lyrics. Here were working class men realising the working man's dream of making it big; wish fulfilment perfectly rendered. "Rock and Roll Star" bleeds self-believe and pure determination and it is no surprise that Oasis went on to become such a phenomenal success.
