10 Pop Songs That Artists Want You To Forget
3. Your Body is a Wonderland - John Mayer
For a good portion of the rock audience, this is the moment where John Mayer looked like one of the douchier white guys with an acoustic guitar. Though he may have had some decent chops behind his instrument, hearing this guy who looks like a frat bro singing about this girl's bubblegum tongue was enough to turn a lot of people off and they just never returned. But you wanna know a little secret? John might actually be siding with you guys on this one.
Ever since his big hit, John has practically made an entire career trying to shake off that side of his sound, bringing in a lot of blues textures and even bits and pieces of country into the mix. If you listen to a record like Continuum, you can hear him trying to reach for something a lot more substantial than just your average guitar pop music, with a song like Gravity working miles better than this song has ever done.
And even though it might alienate some people, John has been upfront with not really liking Your Body is a Wonderland. Knowing that his audience is spread 50/50 these days between guitar enthusiasts and nostalgic fans, there have even been times during the set where John starts talking to the crowd about how he's just going to get through these next few minutes of playing this song before going back to the rest of the show. For a man that's gotten to a level of guitar hero status, this is like looking back on your high school photos and seeing what you used to look like. It might be fun to revisit, but you don't necessarily want to live that life either.
