10 Reasons Indie Rock Is In The Doldrums

7. Live Music Experiences Are Getting Bigger

Working class boys with guitars used to be the idea of true live talent. A live show would be considered as such only if the artists were actually playing the instruments themselves. But technology and ambition is growing, and the idea of what works live is no longer limited to axe-men. It's partly a result of no money from CDs, but acts from Kanye West to Take That, the XX to the late Tupac have all put on live shows that are grandiose and eye-catching. Beyonce is headlining festivals alongside U2 and music is changing; talent is no longer limited to instrument playing, and artists are tailoring their music to huge venues. Indie bands have stiff competition these days live; booking Bloc Party over Jay-Z is a risky decision. And with the rise and rise of Glastonbury, followed by Reading and Leeds broadening their demographic, it's almost considered not enough for a band like Kings of Leon to just stand there playing the hits (or not, as they'd probably rather). These days, we demand lights, elaborate sets and background video projections. Skinny-jeaned poseurs have had the bar raised.
