His first album came out in 1966, when Zappa was 25. His grand total of 62 albums released means that he averaged around 2.38 albums per year during his lifetime.

How did he find time to do literally anything else?

That first record, Freak Out!, was way ahead of its time. It was a double album of Zappa's satirical takes on modern American culture and served as an inspiration for The Beatles when they were making Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Zappa's final album, a collection of orchestral pieces called The Yellow Shark, came out just a month before his untimely death. Although, technically, this was only the final album released by Zappa during his lifetime.

Since his passing, another 64 Zappa albums have been officially released by his estate, bringing his total up to 126 and counting.

Posthumous releases are always a bit dodgy, so they don't count here, but they still serve as a testament to the sheer volume of work the star left behind.

And even if they did count, he'd still be way off the number one spot...
