10 Rock Music Songs That You Didn't Know Were About Drugs
2. There She Goes - The La's
Just as the '90s were arriving, the La's have always been one of the more overlooked bands of the decade. Even though grunge would end up taking over the alternative scene and dominate the sounds of the day, these Brits' unique brand of college rock fit in just as well with the R.E.M.'s of the world and became favorites of people like Noel Gallagher later down the line. Then again, it's no surprise that a song about heroin addiction didn't exactly light up the hit parade.
And before you even ask, yes the 'she' in the lyrics is not necessarily a female...it's about the wonders of getting strung out on heroin. You wouldn't have known it from the feel of the song though. Hell, even if you were a heroin junkie, you wouldn't even suspect a song like this describing you, since it's way too sunshine-y and infectious to really ignore.
When you get down to the lyrics though, Lee Mavers talking about this supposed girl running through his brain and pulsing through his veins isn't exactly subtle in describing the unique relationship he has with his favorite substance. Which makes it all the more hilarious when you have more wholesome bands like Sixpence None the Richer covering it in later years. Congrats, everyone! We actually got a song that's openly about heroin and made it catchy enough to be played by a Christian rock band.
