10 Rockers Who Yelled At Their Fans Onstage
2. Green Day's Mudfight
The entire leadup to what ensued at Woodstock '94 was an absolutely beautiful mess. Along with trying to bring the peace and love movement to a music scene that was immersed in irony, some of the biggest bands of the day managed to make their time count on stage, with everyone from Red Hot Chili Peppers to Cypress Hill getting a prime time spot. Though Nine Inch Nails made their time count by playing while covered in mud, Green Day made their own luck when the fans turned on them.
One of the only common threads that connected this gig and the original Woodstock was terrible weather, and the pop punk brats were in less than ideal conditions when everything started. With the floor of the grounds turning to mud pretty quickly, some of the disgruntled fans were getting tired of the pop punk schtick and started hurling handfuls of the stuff at the stage.
Not to be outdone by his own fans, Billie Joe Armstrong didn't even try to continue on with the song, letting the rest of the rhythm section jam as he put his guitar down and started to throw the rest of the mud back at the crowd. The ensuing chaos didn't end well for everyone involved though, from Billie telling everyone to quiet down and getting nowhere to Mike Dirnt being taken out by a security guard who thought he was a stage crasher. Although the sight of having the world's biggest mudfight seemed cool at first, Billie probably wasn't aware of just what he got himself into.
