10 Songs You Had No Idea Are Based On Terrible Crimes

2. Nirvana €“ Polly

You'd be forgiven for thinking the Nirvana song Polly €“ which appears on 1991's Nevermind €“ is simply about a parrot. Okay, so maybe you wouldn't be, but for many it's tough to really see beyond the chorus lyrics €œPolly wants a cracker€. In actuality, Polly is about something significantly darker. According to the band's bass player Krist Novoseli, Kurt Cobain was inspired to write Polly after reading a newspaper article about the abduction, torture and rape of a young teenage girl. The girl was kidnapped by a man named Gerald Arthur Friend, who had offered her a lift after a rock concert in order to trap her. Thankfully, in the end, the girl was able to escape from Gerald after he stopped at a gas station; she managed to exit his car and cause a commotion significant enough that members of the general public were notified.
