10 Trippy Albums You MUST Hear Before You Die
5. All Them Witches - Lightning at the Door (2013)
Formed in 2012 in Nashville, Tennessee, All Them Witches fuse traditional psychedelic sounds, with down south, dirty blues riffs and heavy metal. Simultaneously conjuring up images of smoky whisky joints and painted peyote landscapes, the band create a mind-melting space cowboy sound all their own.
After a sombre start, the band’s second album explodes into the heavy bass, dirgy guitar and frantic drumming of “When God Comes Back”, a song combining religious scepticism with artful lyrics: “Cut me up, primitive/I’ll die like a slave/Riding on the wings of that Jesus snake”. Then, luring you in with a sweet, almost ghostly two minute long intro, “Swallowed by the Sea” abruptly removes you from your dream state with heavy, growling guitar, and deep, chest thumping bass, before extending into a long bluesy jam session. Being sure to take you back to a state of calm, the album closes with the folksy, roots music inspired “Romany Dagger”, and the earthly, shamanesque “Mountain”.
With a raw, primal energy and deep sense of mysticism, the music on this album, like smoke in a room, will spread until it fills every hidden corner of your mind, leaving you in a perpetual, undulating groove you’ll be reluctant to step out of.
