11. The Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays

A lot of people have hard feelings towards Mondays, so it isn’t inconceivable that a band would make an anthem for the most dreaded day of the week. However, I Don’t Like Mondays has a much darker origin.

Lead singer Bob Geldof wrote the lyrics after hearing about a shooting. In 1979, 16-year-old Brenda Spencer shot at children in a playground at the Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego. Geldof was fascinated by the fact that Spencer showed absolutely no remorse, coldly stating, “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.”

The song was received with some controversy but was a hit in the United Kingdom.
