12 Most Hated Hard Rock Songs (On Great Albums)
12. Back To School - Deftones
At a time when most nu metal bands were riding high, Deftones stood out as something much different from the Korns of the world. Their exquisite mix of electronica and metal created a sound that felt like if Radiohead decided to become a metal band. Out of all their great output, this combination of genres never fit more perfectly than on White Pony.
The album is an absolute headtrip to listen to and a must for any fan of heavy music, but apparently perfection wasn't good enough for the band's label. After putting the finishing touches on the record, the band were told to write something that felt more in line with the nu metal sound of the day.
Songwriter Chino Moreno was furious at these demands and rewrote the closer "Pink Maggit" to show the label how stupid it would be to write a hit song based on nu metal tendencies. The label didn't seem to get the joke and released the song anyway, which ended up becoming a big hit with the angsty teenage audience of MTV. Though this song may have paid off from a financial standpoint, even hardcore Deftones fans are still finding new ways to make fun of "Back To School."
